The Problem

45 million people worldwide are blind and over 90% of them live in the poorest parts of the developing world. 50% of this blindness is due to cataracts. The surgery to remove cataracts can be performed cheaply in less than 5 minutes, but training a doctor to perform the operation is extremely expensive and time consuming. This is due to the time needed to perfect the necessary coordination skills and the extremely high prices of the current surgical simulators.

Our Solution...

Design a simulator utilising motion sensitive controllers that simulates the major steps in the cataracts operation. We used C#, XNA and Visual Studio to design the simulator, also utilising an open source Wii-mote library and blender. All our simulator needs in order to run is a standard windows computer with Bluetooth capabilities and a motion sensitive controller, making it less than 1% of the cost of the current simulators.
